Your Makeup Brushes Called. They Would Like a Wash.

The tools touching your face deserve attention too.

You remember to blend your foundation. You remember your favourite blusher. But when did you last wash the brushes applying them?

It is easy to postpone brush cleaning when the tools still look usable. Yet brushes collect makeup residue, oil and dirt with regular use. A simple cleaning habit helps keep your makeup tools fresh and ready for your routine.

How often should you wash makeup brushes?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing makeup brushes every 7 to 10 days. Dermatologists also advise using your own brushes rather than sharing them.

A simple brush-cleaning routine

  1. Rinse the bristle tips under lukewarm running water to loosen makeup. Try to keep water away from the brush handle and the base of the bristles.
  2. Swirl the tips in a bowl of lukewarm water with a tablespoon of gentle or clarifying shampoo. You can also gently massage the bristles in your palm to work up a lather.
  3. Rinse and repeat until the water runs clear.
  4. Press out excess water with a clean, dry towel or paper towel. Avoid twisting or pulling the bristles.
  5. Lay brushes flat to dry on a clean towel, with the bristle ends hanging slightly over the edge of a counter. Let them dry fully before putting them away.

The AAD advises against drying brushes upright in a container while they are wet, because water can run down into the handle and loosen the glue holding the brush head in place. Follow the care instructions supplied with your brushes, especially for specialist tools.

Make it a habit you can keep

Choose a regular day for brush care and add it to your diary. Keep a clean towel and your preferred gentle cleanser ready, and allow enough drying time before you plan to use the brushes again.

As you clean, check that each brush still feels comfortable and is easy to care for. If it is damaged or no longer cleans properly, follow the manufacturer’s guidance on replacing it.

Your favourite makeup deserves tools you are happy to put against your skin. Give brush care a place in your routine, alongside the beauty appointments you remember so well.
