Make sun protection a habit, not a holiday purchase.
Sunglasses? In the bag. Beach towel? Packed. Sunscreen? Finally remembered.
For many of us, sunscreen belongs to the holiday checklist. It comes out for beach days, pool afternoons and summer breaks, then quietly disappears into a cupboard.
But what about the walk to the shops, an outdoor lunch or a weekend spent gardening?
At FD Beauty Studio DS, we encourage you to give sun protection a regular place in your skincare conversation. You do not need a more complicated routine. You need a habit that fits your life.
Think beyond the summer holiday
Sun exposure happens during everyday activities, including on cloudy days and in winter. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises remembering sunscreen whenever you go outside, whether you are on holiday or taking a neighbourhood walk. [1]
That makes your morning routine a useful place to start thinking about the day ahead. Will you be walking, meeting friends on a terrace or spending the afternoon outdoors? Plan your protection before you leave.
What should you look for in a sunscreen?
The AAD recommends three features: SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection and water resistance. Broad-spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB rays. [2]
Once you have checked those basics, consider how the formula feels and how easily it fits into your routine. A beautiful bottle is only useful when it gets opened.
You do not need to choose a product because it is fashionable or because somebody else's skin loves it. Read its label and choose something you can comfortably use as directed.
Applying it once is only part of the habit
When outdoors, reapply sunscreen about every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating, following the product instructions. Remember that water resistance does not mean waterproof. [1, 3]
If remembering is the difficult part, set a phone reminder before a long day outside. Think about where you will keep the product so it is easy to reach when you need it.
Make remembering easier
Try a few practical changes:
-
Keep it beside your morning skincare. A visible reminder can help you include it when getting ready.
-
Check the expiry date. Look at the bottle you already own before relying on it for another season.
-
Plan for time away from home. Pack your sunscreen when an outdoor lunch or walk is on the agenda.
-
Read storage instructions. Keep the product in conditions recommended on its label.
-
Make room for reapplication. Think about your whole day, rather than only the moment you leave the house.
Choose one change you can repeat consistently. Your routine does not have to become an elaborate project.
Give shade and clothing a place too
Sunscreen works alongside other protective habits. Seek shade and wear suitable protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. [3]
Before heading out, think about the practical details: is there a shaded place to sit, and have you packed what you need? Small preparations make these habits easier to follow.
Give your skincare basics some attention
It is easy to spend time comparing serums while forgetting the everyday habits around them. Before adding another bottle to your shelf, take a moment to review the products you already use and how they fit together.
Your skincare routine should fit your skin, your budget and your life.
